For years, social media and search lived in separate boxes. Social was for "brand awareness"; search was for "getting found". AI has knocked the wall down between them.

AI learns from the conversation

When AI tools write an answer, they draw on sources from across the web. Pew Research Center found that Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most-cited sources in Google's AI summaries, together accounting for 15% of sources. Semrush found Quora and Reddit were the most commonly cited websites in Google AI Overviews.

15% of sources cited in Google's AI summaries came from just three sites: Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit.

In other words: video, discussion and community content matter. What people say about you, and what you share, is now part of how machines decide who to recommend.

The audience is already there

DataReportal counts 55.5 million social media user identities in the UK, equal to 79.7% of the population. Your customers are scrolling. The question is whether they're seeing you.

And the visitors are worth more

Semrush's research suggests the average visitor from AI search is 4.4 times as valuable as a traditional organic visitor, based on conversion rate, because AI has often answered their questions before they click.

What to do

  1. Post helpful content that answers real customer questions, especially video.
  2. Join the conversation where your customers hang out, including local groups and forums.
  3. Encourage reviews and mentions on the platforms your customers trust.
  4. Join up your social and search strategy. That's how we work.
